The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Fort Myers, Sanibel, and Captiva Islands

Are you in need of sun, sand, and sea? Fort Myers, Florida is the place for you. I recently spent a week exploring Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva Island thanks to Visit Fort Myers, and I can’t believe I hadn’t made a trip sooner. Here’s the scoop on my itinerary and the highlights of my trip.

What to Do

  • Stroll through the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. With over 20 acres of botanical gardens, the estate features the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, along with the Edison botanic research laboratory.

  • Hike the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. With over 3400 acres of wetland, the Six Mile Cypress Slough is home to a diverse population of plants and animals, some endangered. The boardwalk loop is 1.2 miles and a great way to spend an hour soaking in the nature.

  • Paddle with manatees at Lovers Key State Park. Rent a board or kayak from Lovers Key Adventures and head out on the water. There’s a good chance you’ll see manatees and if you do, don’t worry! Manatees are peaceful animals that seem to be curious more than anything. I found a group of three that let me float nearby and enjoy their company.

Where to Eat:

  • Ella Mae’s Diner: Part of Luminary Hotel, Ella Mae’s is a retro-inspired diner with classic comfort food. They serve breakfast all day.

  • Matanzas on the Bay: Casual dining with water views and a menu of seafood and pizza.

  • The Fresh Catch: Beachfront views and endless seafood options make this restaurant a great place to dine at sunset after a day by the water.

  • The Veranda: If you’re looking to get fancy, The Veranda offers a first class dining experience with Southern regional cuisine, an extensive wine list, and a romantic courtyard illuminated by string lights. You’ll see formal attire here so don’t be afraid to dress up for this one!
